UK which ranked as the number one destination for tourists in 2004 has become the second largest source for tourists to Sri Lanka during the recent years after India. UK accounts for 20% of total tourists arrivals to Sri Lanka. It is considered as the main market for Sri Lanka's tourism in Europe. The average stay of UK tourists in Sri Lanka is for 10 nights and accounts for 30% of total tourism related earnings in Sri Lanka.

Tourist arrivals from UK which exceeded 100,000 in 2004, with a temporary set back in 2005 due to tsunami has recovered to a great extent thereafter. 94,060 UK tourists had visited Sri Lanka in 2007, recording a 6.5% increase compared to 2006 .
