New High Commissioner H.E. Nihal Jayasinghe Assumes Duties

 

H. E. Nihal Jayasinghe assumed duties on July 2, 2008 as High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the Court of St James and Ambassador to Ireland.

A simple ceremony of religious observances followed by a traditional Sri Lankan reception was held at the High Commission of Sri Lanka at No.13, Hyde Park Gardens to mark the occasion.

Justice Nihal Jayasinghe was appointed High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the Court of St James and Ambassador to Ireland by the President of Sri Lanka with effect from 1 July 2008.

Justice Jayasinghe was until his retirement two months ago a Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. He was previously a Judge of the Court of Appeal. His distinguished legal career began as a State Counsel in the Attorney General's Department in 1971 where he rose to become Deputy Solicitor General prior to his elevation to the bench.

A graduate in Law from the University of Colombo and an Attorney-at-Law, Justice Jayasinghe pursued post-graduate studies at the University of Illinois, USA and the University of Lund in Sweden. He has also served in the UN War Crimes Tribunal and represented Sri Lanka in many international legal fora.

He is a distinguished old boy of St Joseph’s College, Colombo.
