New Sri Lanka High Commissioner

 

Sri Lanka's new High Commissioner to the UK H. E. Nihal Jayasinghe on 9/7 called on the Rt. Hon. Lord Malloch Brown, Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs.

 

H.E. Nihal Jayasinghe, new High Commissioner-designate of Sri Lanka to the Court of St James and Ambassador to Ireland assumed duties at the Sri Lanka High Commission, 13, Hyde Park Gardens on 2 July, 2008.

 

New Sri Lanka High Commissioner

Justice Nihal Jayasinghe has been appointed High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the Court of St James and Ambassador to Ireland by the President of Sri Lanka with effect from 1 July 2008 in succession to High Commissioner Kshenuka Senewiratne.

High Commissioner-designate Mr. Nihal Jayasinghe called on H. E. the President on June 30, before his departure to London.

Justice Jayasinghe was until his retirement two months ago a Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. He was previously a Judge of the Court of Appeal. His distinguished legal career began as a State Counsel in the Attorney General's Department in 1971 where he rose to become Deputy Solicitor General prior to his elevation to the bench.

A graduate in Law from the University of Colombo and an Attorney-at-Law, Justice Jayasinghe pursued post-graduate studies at the University of Illinois, USA and the University of Lund in Sweden. He has also served in the UN War Crimes Tribunal and represented Sri Lanka in many international legal fora.

He is a distinguished old boy of St Joseph's College, Colombo.
